Welcome to Teacher Liv's Classroom!
My counter-hegemonic classroom is rooted in beliefs and actions around Safety & Love, Access, Engagement, and Liberation. Student safety and facilitation of self-love and cross-cultural acceptance are the first steps to creating my classroom culture of liberation. I do not believe in fixed intelligence, instead, my teaching philosophy is rooted in developing and sustaining a growth mindset for learning.
Love to Liberation Pipeline

1
Safety and Love
Students should feel intelligent simply because they exist. Establishing clear community norms that are liberatory of dominant views of intelligence or deficit beliefs on student identity allows students to feel safe and loved. Children shouldn’t guess if they’re wanted in the classroom; they should be valued for their existence.
2
Access and Engagement
All students are capable of deeper learning. They need differentiation, scaffolding, and a relevant curriculum that fits their needs and assets. Accessible learning means disrupting hierarchical status between students and establishing the role of a teacher as a facilitator, not an authoritative force in the classroom.
3
Liberation
Teaching in a way that promotes deeper learning and anti-functionalist ideology includes analyzing historical events, people, and systems in relationship to the self, others, and society. Students should see themselves as readers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. Students are learning truth-seeking, accountability, and restorative practices.
